New year. New blog. New story. New Who. New Sue. New Q (Skyfall). New Being Human crew.

Hope everyone's had a great start to the year. Mine could have been a lot better but you're hear to read a snippet of a story, not listen to me go all Eastenders on you.

So, I've started a new short story Urban Fantasy series, set in my beloved Edinburgh. The first book, 'The Trouble With Pixies' is out now. I'm on the verge of finishing the first edit of the second book, 'Tears of Gold' before submitting it to one or two effervescent beta readers. This week, I've used a snippet from The Trouble With Pixies. In it, Michael has just moved to the Scottish capital with his three children. Meeting his neighbour, Hattie, for the first time, he discovers there's something locked away in his attic.

Michael was getting sick of beating around the bush. 'Just tell me then!'  he shouted.

'They're pixies!' she screamed back.

The ensuing silence was deafening. Michael broke it by laughing. 'Pixies? What?'

Hattie shot him a scathing look, and Michael was sure her violet eye flashed momentarily in the dim glow of the light bulb above them. 'Yes, pixies. And if you'd ever had run-ins with them before, you would not be mocking me.'

It is explained earlier in the story but Hattie is a Heterochromian - someone with two different -coloured irises. Or as I like to call it, Bowie-esque.

Blurby-bit: Michael has just moved to Edinburgh, Scotland, to make a fresh start with his three children. While they're out exploring the city, he's relaxing with a glass of wine. That is until a knock on the front door leads to a bizarre revelation from a strange, red-haired woman, and an encounter in the attic with some unexpected guests.

Thanks for reading. Be sure to check out the rest of the SFFSat offerings this week, by clicking this here link.

  1. Sorry to hear you've had a sucky start to the year - although it would be amusing to hear your Eastend accent ;)

You already know what I think of TTWP - it's fab and the cover is yummy! Best of luck with your new release - Go, Book, Go!

  3. Great snippet...and hopefully the paranoia pertaining to pixies will be unwarranted (but I'm guessing not). ;-)

By the way, love the slide show displaying your books on the main page.

  11. I'm with S.A. A yelling match about pixies is pretty awesome. But I love her last line about not laughing had you ever come into contact. Foreboding!
